From Michigan standout to White Sox GM: The professional trajectory of Chris Getz
In short: Born in 1983, Chris Getz transitioned from a decorated high school and collegiate athlete to a Major League Baseball player, and eventually, a front-office executive. His career path, marked by both on-field challenges and rapid administrative advancement, offers a window into the modern evolution of professional baseball leadership.
Christopher Ryan Getz, born in Southfield, Michigan, established his athletic credentials early. At Grosse Pointe South High School, he earned recognition as a three-time All-Michigan selection and shared the title of Michigan's Mr. Baseball in 2002. After initially being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2002, he chose collegiate baseball at Wake Forest University before transferring to the University of Michigan. His performance in the Cape Cod Baseball League further solidified his status as a major league prospect.
Getz’s professional playing career, spanning 2008 to 2014, was defined by versatility and persistent injury. After debuting with the White Sox in 2008, he became their starting second baseman in 2009, leading the American League with a 92.6 percent stolen base rate. However, his subsequent tenure with the Kansas City Royals was hampered by a series of physical setbacks, including a concussion, a bruised ribcage, and a broken thumb. He concluded his playing career in 2014 after a brief stint with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Following his retirement, Getz pivoted to player development, returning to the Kansas City Royals in 2014 before rejoining the Chicago White Sox in 2017. As the director of player development, he oversaw a farm system that was ranked the best in Major League Baseball in 2017, working with notable prospects such as Luis Robert Jr. and Dylan Cease. His administrative ascent continued with a promotion to assistant general manager in 2021. Following the departure of Rick Hahn in August 2023, Getz was appointed as the senior vice president and general manager of the Chicago White Sox, completing his journey from a draft pick to the head of the organization's baseball operations.
