Christian Elliss and the rare feat of a multi-generational NFL defensive dynasty
In short: Born into a family where football is the family business, Christian Elliss has carved his own path through the NFL. From an undrafted free agent to a key defensive contributor, his journey highlights the grit required to sustain a career in the league when the odds are stacked against you.
Born on January 2, 1999, in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Christian Elliss is one of 12 children in a family deeply rooted in professional football. His father, Luther Elliss, was a defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions, and Christian is part of a rare lineage of second-generation NFL players. Alongside his brothers Kaden, Noah, and Jonah, he represents a significant family presence in the league, a testament to both athletic pedigree and the competitive environment of his upbringing at Valor Christian high school.
Elliss’s collegiate career at the University of Idaho was marked by consistent growth. After a freshman year in 2017 that saw him record 30 tackles, he transitioned from middle to outside linebacker, earning first-team All-Big Sky honors twice. Despite this collegiate success, he went unselected in the 2021 NFL draft. His professional entry was anything but straightforward; he began as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, followed by a series of practice squad stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. These early years were defined by the volatility of the practice squad system, where roster spots are often temporary.
The turning point in his career arrived through perseverance on special teams and defensive depth roles. After re-signing with the Eagles in 2022, he eventually secured a spot on the active roster, contributing significantly to special teams before moving to the New England Patriots in December 2023. His performance in New England, particularly after stepping in for injured starters, led to a career-high 80 tackles and a notable interception against Anthony Richardson. By 2025, his value was solidified when the Patriots matched a $13.5 million offer sheet from the Las Vegas Raiders, keeping him in New England for two more years and cementing his status as a reliable professional linebacker.
