In short: Christian Hackenberg was a five-star recruit and the nation's top pro-style quarterback. Despite being drafted in the second round and signing a multi-million dollar contract, he spent his entire professional career as a spectator on the sidelines—a rare odyssey of potential meeting the brutal reality of depth charts.

ESPN labelled Hackenberg a premier pro-style quarterback prospect when he joined college football as a top-tier talent. He chose Penn State over heavyweights like Alabama and Florida, eventually becoming a standout for the Nittany Lions. As a true freshman in 2013, he broke ten school records and was named the Big Ten Football Freshman of the Year. His performance was defined by a 'calm demeanor' that contrasted with his coach’s fiery style, leading him to be ranked as the fifth-best quarterback eligible for the 2016 NFL draft.

However, the transition to the professional ranks proved to be an exercise in extreme patience. After joining the New York Jets via the 51st overall pick on a four-year, $4.66 million deal, Hackenberg became a rarity: just the third first or second round QB since 1967 to fail to appear in any match during his initial two years. Despite being active for four games with the Jets due to decimated depth charts, he never saw a snap of live action during those years.

His journey continued through several organizations, including the Raiders, Eagles, and Bengals, before he attempted a comeback in the short-lived Alliance of American Football (AAF). Even there, his first meaningful action since college was marred by struggles, leading to him being benched before the league folded. Today, Hackenberg has pivoted away from the gridiron entirely, pursuing a career in real estate and cybersecurity while coaching high school football.

During 2013, he surpassed one Penn State record and ten freshman marks for the school.
