How a failed political candidate plotted to dismantle the Roman Republic from within.
In short: The Catiline Conspiracy remains a defining moment of the late Roman Republic. This video examines the power struggle between the statesman Cicero and the disgruntled aristocrat Catiline, whose failed bid for the consulship ignited a dangerous plot to overthrow the Roman government.
The conflict pitted Marcus Tullius Cicero, a renowned orator and consul, against Lucius Sergius Catilina, a patrician who turned to subversion after being barred from the consulship in 66 BCE. Catiline's political career had previously included serving as a praetor in 68 BCE and overseeing the province of Africa for two years.
Both men shared a military background, having served together during the Social War under the command of Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo. Their rivalry unfolded during the final century of the Roman Republic, a volatile era that eventually collapsed following the 44 BCE assassination of Julius Caesar and the subsequent rise of Augustus Caesar as the first emperor.
