From a single Mexican cinema to a global empire of luxury
In short: What began in 1971 as a local venture in Michoacán has transformed into a global cinematic powerhouse. Today, Cinépolis spans continents, pioneering immersive technologies like 4DX and ScreenX to redefine the movie-going experience through high-end luxury and multisensory innovation.
In 1971, Enrique Ramírez Miguel established Organización Ramírez within Morelia, Michoacán, marking the start of the Cinépolis heritage. Before the modern brand emerged, the company operated under names like Cinematográfica Cadena de Oro, S.A., and expanded through cities such as Salamanca, Acámbaro, and Guanajuato. The transition to the Cinépolis identity occurred in 1994, introducing multiplex-style theaters to Tijuana and establishing the foundation for what would become the largest cinema chain in Latin America.
Innovation has been a central pillar of the company's expansion. In 199 luxury cinema development, the brand launched Cinépolis VIP in 1999, a move that positioned them as pioneers in the luxury cinema concept. They have since integrated advanced technologies, such as 4DX—which utilizes motion seats, wind, water, and over 100 different scents—and the 270-degree ScreenX multi-screen format. In 2011, a $25 million investment allowed for the rollout of 11 4DX theaters in Mexico, a technology that has since expanded to include markets in Brazil, Chile, and the United States.
The company's footprint is truly international, with significant operations in India, where they acquired the Fun Cinemas chain in 2015. In India, they have managed massive expansions, including plans for hundreds of screens across various cities. Beyond the silver screen, the organization maintains a complex legacy, including the Cinépolis Foundation, established in 2003 to provide medical and educational aid in Mexico, and a history of navigating complex regulatory environments, such as a 2015 fine involving the display of political propaganda.
While the brand has successfully entered markets from the UAE to Indonesia, its journey has not been without friction. The company has faced challenges in certain regions, such as failed expansion attempts in Ecuador and the closure of specific locations in New Jersey and New York. Despite these hurdles, the brand continues to evolve, recently updating its global logo in 2019 and continuing to invest heavily in high-tech, large-format cinema experiences worldwide.
