From Manchester City's academy to Marseille: the rise of CJ Egan-Riley
In short: A versatile defender's journey through the elite tiers of European football. After a decade of training at Manchester City, CJ Egan-Riley has transitioned from a youth prospect to a decorated professional, navigating the leagues of England, Scotland, and the Netherlands before making a high-profile move to France.
Born in England to parents of Irish and Jamaican descent, Conrad Jaden Egan-Riley has navigated a complex international path. While he represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2018 Victory Shield, he has since become a fixture for England at every youth level from under-15 through to the under-19s. His professional ascent began in his hometown of Manchester, where he trained with Manchester City for over ten years before making his professional debut in an EFL Cup match against Wycombe Wanderers on 21 September 2021.
Egan-Riley's career is marked by significant versatility, capable of playing as a centre-back, right-back, or defensive midfielder. Following a permanent move to Burnley on 1 July 2022, he experienced a series of developmental loans, including a stint with Scottish club Hibernian in early 2023 and a period with Jong PSV in the Dutch Eerste Divisie during the 2024 season. These experiences helped shape a player capable of competing at the highest levels of the English game.
The 2024–25 season proved to be a definitive turning point for the defender. After scoring his first goal for Burnley against Coventry City in November 2024, he became a cornerstone of a record-breaking defensive unit. This success earned him several accolades, including the EFL Young Player of the Month for February 2025 and a place in the EFL Championship Team of the Season. His international success mirrored his club form; he was part of the England squad that won the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, appearing as a substitute in the final victory over Germany.
Despite Burnley's efforts to negotiate a new contract in May 2025, Egan-Riley chose a different path. In June 2025, he rejected a new deal at Turf Moor to pursue an opportunity in France, eventually signing with Ligue 1 side Marseille on 14 June 2025.
