From Latvian ballet halls to the bright lights of professional wrestling
In short: Before she was a household name in the WWE, CJ Perry was a trained ballet dancer in the Soviet Union. Her journey from the Riga Choreography School to the squared circle is a masterclass in reinvention, fueled by a childhood spent in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic.
Born on March 24, 1985, Catherine Joy "CJ" Perry experienced a childhood defined by international movement. While her family is of Portuguese and Venezuelan descent, they spent several years in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic. Her father worked there as a Christian missionary, and the family remained in Latvia even after it regained its independence in 1991.
Perry's early discipline was rooted in classical dance. She attended the Riga Choreography School, the training ground for the Latvian National Opera, and began performing with the Latvian National Ballet at just 14 years old. This foundation in movement later transitioned into a career in dance and acting, including studies at Florida State University and professional work as a backup dancer for major artists like Pink, Usher, and Nelly.
Her transformation into a wrestling icon began in 2013 when she joined WWE's developmental brand, NXT, under the name "Lana." She became famous for her "social ambassador" persona, often utilizing a Russian accent and an anti-American gimmick. This character arc included high-profile storylines involving her real-life partner, Rusev, and controversial televised segments that required WWE to issue apologies to viewers who were offended by the political undertones of her promos.
After a storied career that included appearances in the Pitch Perfect film franchise and various wrestling championships, Perry eventually transitioned away from the ring. Following her release from WWE in June 2021, she has continued her career in show business, currently signed to the company under a "Legends" contract.
