How a small French team created the most awarded debut game in history
In short: Born from a Reddit post and a modest budget, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 defied industry norms to become a global phenomenon. This turn-based RPG captured hearts with its Belle Époque aesthetic and emotional depth, eventually securing the top prize at every major industry awards ceremony in its debut year.
The project began in 2019 when Ubisoft developer Guillaume Broche sought to build a high-fidelity turn-based RPG, a genre he felt AAA studios had abandoned. After leaving his job during the pandemic, Broche formed Sandfall Interactive with a core team of thirty. Operating on a budget of less than $10 million, the studio utilized Unreal Engine 5 to craft a dark fantasy world inspired by the Belle Époque and the Art Deco movement. The narrative, centered on a yearly event where people are erased from existence, was heavily influenced by the French novel La Horde du Contrevent and a personal story about a painter lost within her own canvas.
The game’s combat system blends turn-based strategy with real-time reflexes. Players manage stamina to break enemies, execute quick-time events for enhanced skills, and utilize parry mechanics reminiscent of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Beyond the mechanics, the game’s emotional core—the fear of losing loved ones—was inspired by a conversation Broche had with his mother. This thematic weight resonated with players and critics alike, leading to universal acclaim and a record-breaking performance at The Game Awards 2025, where it won nine categories.
By its first anniversary on 24 April 2026, the title had sold over 8 million units. Its success was unprecedented for a debut, as it became the second game ever to sweep the top honors at the Golden Joystick, The Game Awards, D.I.C.E., GDC, and BAFTA ceremonies. The game's soundtrack also achieved significant commercial success, topping Billboard classical charts for weeks. With a live-action adaptation in development and plans for a broader franchise, Sandfall Interactive has firmly established itself as a major new force in the industry.
