The long road from a village academy to international glory
In short: Connor Roberts didn't become a Premier League regular overnight. His journey from the village of Crynant to the Wales national team was defined by a series of strategic loans, developmental setbacks, and a breakthrough season that saw him recognized as one of the best in his division.
Roberts began his journey at Swansea City's Youth Academy at age 9. Despite securing the Professional U21 Development League 2 trophy during his initial pro year (2014–15), Roberts' journey toward the senior squad involved various obstacles. He spent significant time on loan to gain experience, moving through League Two with Yeovil Town, League One with Bristol Rovers, and the Championship with Middlesbrough.
His time at Yeovil Town proved pivotal; he made 54 appearances in a single season, missing only one match due to a Wales under-21 call-up. During this period, he was highly decorated, receiving three Player of the Year Awards and being voted Young Player of the Year. These experiences provided the foundation for his eventual breakthrough at Swansea City, where he made his debut in January 2018 and was later named the club's Player of the Year for the 2020–21 season.
The ultimate validation of his growth came in 2021 when he joined Burnley for a four-year deal. His consistency was rewarded in 2023 when he was named in both the EFL Championship Team of the Season and the PFA Team of the Year. On the international stage, his career reached a peak during the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, where he scored a vital goal against Turkey before a groin injury cut his tournament short. He has since become a mainstay for Wales, including a selection for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
