The footballer whose career was nearly halted by a hidden heart defect
In short: In 2017, professional footballer Connor Goldson faced a crisis far more serious than any match result. A routine medical screening revealed a cardiac defect, forcing the defender into preventative surgery and sidelining him from the pitch for months, threatening to derail his rising career in the professional leagues.
Connor Goldson’s ascent through the English leagues was marked by rapid success and unexpected adversity. After beginning his professional journey at Shrewsbury Town in 2010, the Wolverhampton-born defender became a standout performer. During the 2014–15 season, his contributions helped secure Shrewsbury's promotion to League One, earning him a place in the PFA League Two Team of the Year and multiple club awards.
However, his momentum was abruptly interrupted in February 2017. A medical screening identified a defect in his heart, necessitating preventative surgery. While the condition sidelined him for the remainder of that season, Goldson demonstrated remarkable resilience. He returned to competitive action in December 2017, making a Premier League debut for Brighton & Hove Albion in a victory against Watford.
Goldson's career later reached new heights in Scotland. Joining Rangers in June 2018 under manager Steven Gerrard, he became a central figure in a historic campaign. During the 2020–21 season, he appeared in every competitive match for the club, helping Rangers secure their 55th overall title and their first top-division championship in a decade, effectively ending Celtic's pursuit of a record tenth consecutive title.
Beyond his defensive duties, Goldson has proven his ability to perform in high-stakes moments, including scoring twice in an Old Firm derby against Celtic in October 2020. Following his tenure at Rangers, which included a UEFA Europa League final appearance in 2022, he transitioned to the Cypriot First Division, joining Aris Limassol in July 2024.
