A cinematic window into Cyprus through the eyes of a vacuum tube pioneer
In short: In June 1969, chemical engineer Watson Kintner captured the textures of Cyprus on film. From the intricate frescoes of Asinou Monastery to the tactile rhythm of a potter's wheel in Lapithos, these reels preserve a vanishing world of Byzantine art and traditional hand-crafted vessels.
The footage, preserved in the Penn Museum collection, offers a detailed visual record of Cypriot life and heritage. During his travels in late June 1969, Kintner documented diverse sites, including the Kykko Monastery, where a golden reliquary box for the bones of saints was observed. The films capture the architectural and artistic richness of the island, such as the 11th-century frescoes in Asinou Monastery. These murals, spanning from 1106 to 1620, provide a significant summation of Byzantine and past-Byzantine mural painting, featuring nineteen distinct scenes, including a depiction of St. David.
Beyond the sacred, the reels document the meticulous mechanics of traditional craftsmanship. Near the village of Lapithos, the films record the process of making pottery by hand on a wheel, detailing the forming of lips, grooves, and decorative scalloping on vessels. In other scenes, the footage shows the creation of baskets using bamboo and black twigs soaked in water, as well as the smoothing and decorating of multi-vase vessels. These segments offer a rare, silent glimpse into the manual labor that defined local industries.
The collection is part of the Watson Kintner Collection. Kintner, who lived from 1890 to 1979, was a chemical engineer for the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and a pioneer in the standardization of the vacuum tube. His travels were extensive; over a 36-year period beginning in 1933, he visited more than 30 countries, making these 1969 travelogues a significant part of his lifelong photographic legacy.
