The Czechoslovak Legion fought across a continent to secure their nation's independence.
In short: During the First World War and the Russian Revolution, a group of volunteers formed the Czechoslovak Legion to fight for self-determination. Their journey evolved from battlefield triumphs against the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a harrowing, epic struggle for survival across Siberia that ultimately helped forge a new state.
The Legion began as a modest volunteer force driven by the desire to break away from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Their reputation grew following a significant victory at the Battle of Zborov, which served as a catalyst for further recruitment. As the Russian Revolution destabilized the region, the Legion found itself caught in the middle of a chaotic conflict.
Forced into a desperate retreat through Siberia, the soldiers navigated shifting political alliances and direct clashes with Bolshevik forces. Despite facing betrayal and the complexities of a collapsing empire, the Legion maintained its focus on the goal of Czechoslovak statehood. Their eventual return home remains a foundational element of Czech and Slovak national identity, remembered as a modern odyssey of perseverance.
