The Romanian manager who won six league titles with one club
In short: Dan Petrescu is a master of domestic dominance. While many managers struggle to maintain consistency, he secured three consecutive Romanian Liga I titles with CFR Cluj alone. From scoring crucial goals in two different World Cups to leading clubs across four continents, his career is a study in tactical longevity.
Petrescu's journey began at Steaua București, where he played in the 1989 European Cup final and later earned 95 caps for Romania. His international career was marked by high-stakes moments: he scored the only goal in a 1994 World Cup win against the United States to secure group victory, but remains haunted by a missed penalty kick in the quarter-finals against Argentina. He also famously scored the winning goal against England at the 1998 World Cup, becoming one of only two Romanians to score in two separate tournaments.
Transitioning from a versatile full-back and winger to a manager, Petrescu became the second-most successful coach in Romania. His tenure with CFR Cluj is particularly notable; he won the league five times with the club alone. He also achieved significant success with Unirea Urziceni, leading them to their first-ever title in 2009 and a historic Champions League run that included a 4–1 victory over Rangers at Ibrox.
His managerial path has been global, spanning Poland, Russia, the UAE, Qatar, China, Turkey, and South Korea. Despite various challenges—including contract terminations in Russia and China due to financial issues or lack of progress—he consistently finds ways to reach the top. His 2019–20 season with CFR Cluj is often cited as a career highlight, where he guided the team through the Europa League group stages and into the knockout phase, earning widespread praise for his ability to compete against elite European opposition.
