How a small-town Romanian football club once nearly signed a Real Madrid legend
In short: Founded in 1953, FC Argeș Pitești became a powerhouse of Romanian football, winning two national titles in the 1970s. Its history is defined by the brilliance of icon Nicolae Dobrin, whose talent was so immense that even the president of Real Madrid once attempted to buy him for millions.
Established by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1953 as Dinamo Pitești, the club climbed from the local City Championship to the top tier of Romanian football by 1961. The 1970s marked the club's golden era, anchored by the legendary Nicolae Dobrin. Under coach Florin Halagian, the team secured its first national title in 1972. This success led to a historic European Cup encounter against Real Madrid, where Dobrin's performance was so captivating that Santiago Bernabéu offered two million dollars and stadium floodlights to secure his transfer—a deal blocked by Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu.
The club claimed its second national title in 1979 after a dramatic victory over Dinamo București. Following Dobrin's retirement in 1983, the team entered a period of decline, eventually suffering its first relegation in 1992. A brief resurgence occurred in the late 1990s, featuring talents like Adrian Mutu, but the club faced severe instability in the 2000s. In 2009, the team was relegated following a corruption scandal involving the bribery of referees, and by 2013, the original club was declared bankrupt.
The spirit of the club survived through the local community. In 2017, the Municipality of Pitești purchased the FC Argeș brand and transferred it to the football section of SCM Pitești, effectively reviving the team. After years of oscillating between the first and second divisions, the club continues to compete today, maintaining its legacy as a central institution in Argeș County. While the Nicolae Dobrin Stadium undergoes reconstruction, the club remains a symbol of local pride, supported by dedicated ultra groups like Violet Republic.
