In short: In 2019, his college career ended after just five games due to a knee injury. Yet, the Vanderbilt standout transformed from a criticized rookie into a two-time NBA All-Star, proving that even a sudden setback cannot derail a generational talent.

Darius Garland’s ascent was marked by both rapid dominance and unexpected hurdles. A standout at Brentwood Academy, where he secured four state championships, Garland entered the 2018 recruiting class as a five-star prospect and one of the nation's premier point guards. However, his transition to the collegiate level at Vanderbilt was abruptly halted. Following a meniscus injury in November 2018, Garland announced he would leave the team in January 2019 to prepare for the NBA draft.

His professional entry was historic; on October 23, 2019, Garland became the first player born in the 2000s to make an NBA debut. While his rookie season saw him struggle with criticism and exclusion from All-Rookie teams, he soon found his rhythm. By 2022, he achieved his first All-Star selection and finished third in the Most Improved Player voting. His scoring prowess reached a peak in November 2022, when he scored 51 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves, including 10 three-pointers.

The trajectory of his career continued to evolve through high-profile transitions. After a period of significant success with the Cleveland Cavaliers—including a 64–18 regular season record in 2025—Garland was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2026 as part of a deal for James Harden. In his Clippers debut, he demonstrated his immediate impact, and by March 2026, he set a franchise record by recording 41 points, 11 assists, and eight three-pointers in a single game.
