Born in Serbia in 1979, Rajaković began his coaching journey at just 16 years old with Borac Čačak. His path to the NBA was paved through diverse international experience and rigorous academic preparation. In 2004, he received a basketball coaching qualification at Belgrade Basketball Academy, followed by a sports management diploma from Alfa BK University during 2006. To sharpen his tactical edge, he spent time observing legendary programs at the University of Arizona under Lute Olson and Duke University under Mike Krzyzewski.
Rajaković's resume is defined by a unique ability to develop talent. Managing the Tulsa 66ers between 2012 and 2014, he became the initial NBA G League leader hailing from beyond North America. During this tenure, his team was assigned players from Oklahoma City 50 times—the most in the league at that time—and he successfully oversaw call-ups for five different players to the NBA. He later joined the Oklahoma City Thunder staff, where he helped lead the team to four consecutive playoff appearances between 2016 and 2019.
His rise reached a milestone on January 11, 2022, when he became only the second European to lead an NBA team in a regular-season game as interim head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies. While he is known for his intellectual approach—having authored academic-style articles on the evolution of the pick-and-roll—he is equally recognized for his warmth and player relations. Now leading the Toronto Raptors, Rajaković remains a pivotal figure in the ongoing narrative of European leadership in American sports.
