In short: Most players dream of the first round, but David Blough’s path to the NFL's coaching ranks was built on grit. After navigating the highs of record-breaking college performances and the lows of being waived, he has risen to lead the Washington Commanders' offense.

David Blough’s journey began in Carrollton, Texas, where he emerged as a highly recruited high school athlete. While some scouting services, such as ESPN, initially ranked him as the seventh-best pocket passer in the class of 2014, other evaluators like Rivals.com and Scout.com placed him much lower. This fluctuation in prestige followed him to Purdue University, where he became a central figure in the Boilermakers' offense.

His collegiate career was marked by extraordinary individual feats and significant adversity. In 2018, Blough set a school record with 572 passing yards against Missouri and established a Big Ten record with 590 total yards in a single game. However, his time at Purdue was also defined by injury, including a concussion that sidelined him during a pivotal game against Iowa. His playing career concluded following a difficult 2018 Music City Bowl loss to Auburn.

Blough entered the professional ranks as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 2019. His NFL playing career saw him move through several organizations, including the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Arizona Cardinals. During his tenure with the Lions, he earned his first NFL start on Thanksgiving Day 2019, notably throwing a 75-yard touchdown to Kenny Golladay.

Transitioning from the field to the sidelines, Blough joined the Washington Commanders' coaching staff in February 2024 as an assistant quarterbacks coach. His rapid ascent continued when he was promoted to offensive coordinator in January 2026, following the departure of Kliff Kingsbury. This progression marks a significant shift from the uncertainty of roster cuts to a primary leadership role in the NFL.
