From the Royal Artillery to the heights of British sitcom royalty
In short: Before he was the mastermind behind legendary BBC comedies like Dad's Army, David Croft was a Major in the Royal Artillery. His journey from wartime service in India and Singapore to creating the most beloved characters in television history is a masterclass in creative reinvention.
Born into a family of performers, Croft’s early life was steeped in show business. His father, Reginald Sharland, was a Hollywood radio actor, while his mother, Annie Croft, was a prominent stage actress and the first woman to lead a West End theatre company. Though he appeared uncredited in the 1939 film Goodbye, Mr. Chips, his true legacy lay in the scripts he penned later in life.
His path was interrupted by the Second World War. After joining the Royal Artillery in 1942, Croft served across North Africa, India, and Singapore. A bout of rheumatic fever in North Africa eventually sent him home to convalesce, after which he completed officer training at Sandhurst. Following the war's end in Europe, he was posted to India with the Essex Regiment, eventually rising to the rank of Major.
The mid-1960s marked his transition to the BBC, where a chance meeting with Jimmy Perry changed television forever. Perry presented Croft with an unsolicited pilot titled The Fighting Tigers; the duo refashioned it into the iconic Dad's Army. This partnership, along with collaborator Jeremy Lloyd, produced a string of hits including Are You Being Served?, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, and 'Allo 'Allo!.
Croft’s influence was immense, earning him an OBE in 1978 and a BAFTA Desmond Davis award in 1981. His signature production style often concluded episodes with a specific flourish: the caption 'You have been watching...' paired with shots of the main cast, a final nod to the characters that had become staples of British culture.
