In short: Before GPS, mapping the North American wilderness required immense physical endurance and precise astronomical calculation. David Thompson, a fur trader turned surveyor, mastered these skills to chart vast, uncharted territories. His work became the foundation for all subsequent maps of the region, revealing a legacy of extraordinary scientific precision.

Born in 1770, David Thompson was trained at the Grey Coat mathematical school, where he learned trigonometry, navigation, and the use of nautical instruments. These skills allowed him to determine latitude and longitude by observing the sun, moon, and tides. In 1794, his expertise earned him the title of official surveyor for the Hudson's Bay Company. He later joined the North West Company, continuing his dual career as a trader and cartographer.

Surveying, the process of making accurate measurements of the Earth's surface, has been essential to human development for centuries. While ancient Egyptians used simple A-frames and plumb bobs to achieve remarkable precision, Thompson utilized more advanced tools like the sextant. In 1793, he demonstrated his mastery of data by performing 34 observations of the longitude of Cumberland House. By averaging these measurements, he achieved a mean error of only about 15 minutes of longitude, a feat that highlighted his deep understanding of statistical power.

Over his career, Thompson traveled 90,000 kilometers and mapped nearly 5 million square kilometers of North America. He was the first European to explore the Columbia River from its source to its mouth. His maps were so accurate that they served as the basis for all subsequent cartography of the western parts of Canada and the United States. Often called the greatest practical land geographer, Thompson proved that rigorous scientific methodology could be applied even in the most remote wilderness.
