In short: Diego Columbus was born to navigate the treacherous waters of the Spanish court rather than the open sea. As the heir to a famous explorer, he spent decades battling royal officials to reclaim his family's titles, privileges, and the vast wealth promised to his father by the crown.

Born in Portugal around 1480, Diego was the only child of Christopher Columbus and Filipa Moniz Perestrelo. His path to power was paved by a strategic marriage to María de Toledo y Rojas, a well-connected noblewoman and cousin to King Ferdinand. This alliance proved essential as Diego navigated the complex political landscape of the Spanish court, where he had served as a page since 1492.

In 1508, Diego was appointed Governor of the Indies, arriving in Santo Domingo the following year to establish his residence at the Alcázar de Colón. His tenure was marked by constant friction with royal authorities who sought to limit his influence. Although a 1511 council confirmed his hereditary titles and his right to a tenth of royal income, his authority was frequently challenged. He was twice recalled to Spain, first in 1514 and finally in 1523, as his influence waned following failed colonial ventures and disputes over his governance.

Beyond the political maneuvering, Diego presided over a colony in flux. His time in the Caribbean saw the first major slave rebellion in the Americas, which erupted on his own sugar plantation in 1522. Following his death in 1526, his descendants continued to litigate his claims for years. A final compromise in 1536 saw his son, Luis, trade the family's expansive rights for a perpetual annuity and the title of Duke of Veragua, effectively closing the chapter on the Columbus family's direct rule in the New World.
