The pitcher who threw a perfect game while nursing a raging hangover
In short: In 1998, David Wells achieved one of baseball's rarest feats: a perfect game. But there was a catch. While most pitchers rely on peak physical condition, Wells reportedly delivered his masterpiece while suffering from a skull-rattling hangover, a detail that would later spark significant controversy.
David Lee Wells, nicknamed "Boomer," enjoyed a prolific 21-season career in Major League Baseball, playing for nine different teams. He was most successful during his stints with the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees. In 1998, while pitching for the Yankees, Wells achieved the 15th perfect game in MLB history by blanking the Minnesota Twins 4–0 on May 17. This feat was particularly remarkable because Wells claimed he was battling a severe hangover at the time, a story later supported by comedian Jimmy Fallon.
Wells's career was often marked by both brilliance and eccentricity. In 1997, he faced a $2,500 fine from manager Joe Torre for wearing an authentic $35,000 Babe Ruth hat that violated uniform standards. His personality also led to friction with management; his autobiography, which touched on his lifestyle and various controversial claims, resulted in a $100,000 fine from the Yankees. The book's title, which alluded to his habits regarding alcohol and fighting, caused significant tension within the organization.
Despite these distractions, Wells was a highly decorated left-handed pitcher. He earned three All-Star appearances and secured two World Series titles, including a championship with the 1992 Blue Jays. His longevity in the league was notable, as he continued pitching into his 40s, even making his first multi-hit game at the age of 44 while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His journey from a kid in San Diego to a two-time champion remains a testament to his resilience on the mound.
