In short: Dean Cox transformed the role of the ruckman, combining dominance in the air with elite ball-winning skills. After a storied career with the West Coast Eagles, he has transitioned from a record-breaking player to leading the Sydney Swans as their senior coach.

Born in Dampier, Western Australia, on 1 August 1981, Cox’s ascent began in the WAFL. After playing colts for East Perth in 1999, he was invited to train with the West Coast Eagles. He was subsequently rookie-listed in the 2000 Rookie Draft, but his impact was immediate; that same year, he won the Simpson Medal while leading East Perth to a premiership. His uncle, George Michalczyk, a former player, recommended him to East Perth. He initially impressed the Eagles during a pre-season training stint.

Cox debuted for the Eagles in 2001 and evolved into one of the league's most dominant ruckmen. His versatility was remarkable; by Round 8 of the 2006 season, he was averaging over 20 hitouts and nearly 20 disposals per game. This dual threat helped him secure six All-Australian selections, including four consecutive years from 2005 to 2008. He was a central figure in West Coast's 2006 premiership victory, a game decided by just one point against Sydney. He overcame a broken collar bone sustained during a collision with Adam Cooney in 2006. His exceptional skill was evident in high-scoring matches against Collingwood.

His career concluded at the end of the 2014 season with a club-record 290 games and 169 goals. At the time of his retirement, his 6,628 hitouts stood as an AFL record. Following his playing days, Cox joined the Sydney Swans as an assistant coach in 2017. In November 2024, he was named the 46th senior coach of the Swans, succeeding John Longmire. He was awarded the West Coast best and fairest in 2008. Outside of football, he co-owned a seafood restaurant called Beluga.
