In short: Founded in 1986, the West Coast Eagles shattered the Victorian dominance of Australian rules football. By winning the 1992 Grand Final, they became the first club from outside Victoria to secure a premiership, fundamentally shifting the landscape of the national competition and paving the way for a new era of AFL success.

The Eagles entered the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1987 as one of two expansion teams, alongside the Brisbane Bears. Led by inaugural coach Ron Alexander and captain Ross Glendinning, the club utilized a squad largely drawn from the West Australian Football League (WAFL). This strategic recruitment allowed them to find immediate footing, defeating Richmond by 14 points in their first senior match at Subiaco Oval.

The club's golden era began under coach Mick Malthouse, who took over in 1990 as the competition rebranded to the Australian Football League (AFL). After a narrow loss to Hawthorn in 1991, the Eagles achieved a historic milestone in 1992, defeating Geelong by 28 points to become the first non-Victorian team to win an AFL Grand Final. They followed this with a second premiership in 1994 by defeating Geelong once again.

Despite their success, the club has faced significant volatility. The early 2000s saw a decline, including a 14th-place finish in 2001, their worst in history. This period was also marked by off-field controversies involving drug charges and legal issues for players like Ben Cousins. However, the club rebounded to win a fourth premiership in 2006, defeating Sydney by a single point in a game that mirrored their qualifying final loss to the same opponent.

By 2021, the Eagles had established themselves as one of the league's most influential clubs, boasting a membership of 107,079. Their legacy is defined by both high-stakes triumphs and periods of intense struggle, including a three-year drought between 2008 and 2010 where they failed to reach any finals series.
