In short: In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the path to monasticism is a slow, deliberate ascent through three distinct degrees. Unlike Western traditions, this process is standardized across the entire Church, requiring years of discipline, formal tonsure, and the gradual adoption of specific garments that signify a total surrender to the divine.

The journey begins with the novitiate, where a candidate lives in a monastery under the guidance of an abbot or abbess. There is no formal ceremony here; the novice simply receives permission to wear monastic clothing. This period is voluntary, and a novice may leave at any time or choose to remain in this initial state indefinitely out of humility.

Upon advancing, a monk or nun enters the first degree, the Rassophore, or 'Robe-bearer.' During this tonsure service, the candidate receives a new name and the outer cassock. While no formal vows are made, the Rassophore is morally obligated to remain in the monastic estate for life. The next level, the Stavrophore, or 'Cross-bearer,' marks a 'betrothal' to the highest degree. Here, the monastic makes formal vows of stability, chastity, obedience, and poverty, and receives the paramandyas, a cloth piece representing the yoke of Christ.

The final stage is the Great Schema, reserved for those who have reached a high level of spiritual excellence. The Schemamonk or Schemanun receives the analavos, a garment embroidered with symbols of the Passion, such as the crown of thorns and the nails of the cross. In some traditions, this degree is only given on one's deathbed, while in others, such as the cenobitic monasteries on Mount Athos, it may be conferred three years after beginning monastic life. This progression reflects the Church's view that monastic vows are a lifelong, sacred commitment not to be entered into lightly.
