The grim mechanics of professional sports' disaster drafts
In short: When tragedy strikes a professional sports team, the league must balance the preservation of the game with the reality of human loss. Disaster drafts provide a structured, often somber mechanism to rebuild rosters when players are killed or permanently disabled, ensuring the sport can continue despite catastrophe.
Professional leagues maintain specific contingency plans to address catastrophic events, such as plane crashes or mass accidents. These protocols determine whether a team can continue its season or if the league must intervene to rebuild the roster. To illustrate, a season's plan by Major League Baseball (MLB) activates if a club experiences the permanent disability, dismemberment, or death of six players during the off-season, or five during a season. The commissioner then decides, in consultation with the Players' Association, if the club can proceed.
The mechanisms for restocking vary significantly by sport. Within MLB, a Restocking Draft enables a club with disabilities to pick an equal number of players to those lost, while teams without disabilities supply specific roles such as outfielders and catchers. The NBA's plan activates if five or more players are killed or dismembered, requiring other teams to protect only five players to ensure quality 'sixth men' are available. Conversely, the NHL allows an affected team to first purchase contracts from other teams using a special insurance fund before an emergency rehabilitation draft is triggered.
The NFL distinguishes between a 'near-disaster' (fewer than 15 players disabled) and a 'disaster' (15 or more). In a near-disaster, the team receives preferential waiver rights; if a quarterback is lost, they can draft up to two from teams with three available. If a full disaster occurs, the commissioner may cancel the season, granting the team the first pick in the next regular draft and initiating a special draft where teams protect 32 players.
The KHL's policy was specifically implemented following the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash, which killed an entire traveling roster. Unlike other leagues, it allows the afflicted team to call up five players from its farm teams and previously guaranteed a spot in the draft lottery until 2016. These rules highlight the complex legal and logistical effort required to manage the intersection of professional entertainment and human tragedy.
