In short: Originally destined for a live spectacle in Omaha, the 2020 MLB draft was forced into remote studios in New Jersey. Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, the league had to drastically restructure its traditional selection process, resulting in a condensed five-round draft that fundamentally altered how teams built their future rosters.

The 2020 Major League Baseball draft, held on June 10 and 11, was a significant departure from tradition. While the draft order was determined by the reverse order of the 2019 MLB season standings, the pandemic necessitated a radical reduction in length. Following a March 26, 2020, agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, the draft was shortened to just five rounds. This decision followed a proposal that would have allowed teams to sign unlimited undrafted players for $20,000 each, a plan the league ultimately bypassed in favor of the shortened draft format.

The event was also marked by unprecedented disciplinary actions. As a consequence for their involvement in a sign-stealing scandal, the Houston Astros were forced to forfeit both their first- and second-round picks. The Boston Red Sox also faced penalties, forfeiting their second-round pick due to their own sign-stealing violations. In contrast, the Detroit Tigers, holding the first overall pick due to their 2019 record, selected Spencer Torkelson.

Despite the logistical shifts, the draft produced immediate talent. Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox made history on September 18, 2020, as the first MLB player in six years to debut in the same calendar year he was drafted. The talent pool was notably international, featuring 41 players from the United States national baseball team and two from the Canada national baseball team. While the draft was meant to accompany the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, it was instead broadcast from MLB Network's studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.
