In short: When David Tennant was offered the role of the Doctor, he feared being remembered as a mere fleeting appearance. Instead, his first full series transformed the show's mythology, introducing parallel universes, reimagined villains, and a seasonal tradition that changed British television forever.

The transition into the second series of the Doctor Who revival was marked by significant shifts in both casting and storytelling. Following a brief appearance in late 2005, David Tennant took over as the tenth Doctor. His casting was a surprise even to the actor, who was offered the role at head writer Russell T Davies' home while filming Casanova. Initially, Tennant worried that if the show were not renewed, he would be known only as the man who played the Doctor for 35 seconds.

The 2006 season, which ran from April 15 to July 8, introduced a more interconnected narrative structure. Unlike the first series, which had to establish every detail, the second series utilized a looser story arc involving the mysterious organization 'Torchwood.' This allowed for a more complex mythology, even as the production team worked to manage budgets by focusing on Earth-based settings and practical locations, such as the Dyffryn Gardens and the Stella Artois brewery.

The series also reimagined classic antagonists. The Cybermen were brought back with a new origin story rooted in a parallel dimension, where the focus shifted from 'silver' aesthetics to the more chilling concepts of 'metal' and 'steel' to emphasize their loss of humanity. This era also saw the departure of core companion Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper, who left the series following the two-part finale, 'Doomsday.'

Beyond the main episodes, the production experimented with new media. The series included 'Tardisodes'—short prequels designed for digital download. While these saw massive success on computers with 2.6 million downloads, mobile phone adoption was much lower, averaging only 3,000 downloads per episode due to network fees and device incompatibility.
