The final era of the Russell T Davies revival begins with series 15
In short: Premiering in April 2025, Doctor Who's fifteenth series marks a major turning point. It is the final series led by showrunner Russell T Davies in his second tenure and the second to star Ncuti Gatwa. With a new companion and a shifting production landscape, the long-running sci-fi epic enters a new chapter.
Series 15, also referred to as Season Two, premiered on 12 April 2025. This installment is the fifteenth series since the show's 2005 revival and the forty-first season overall. It marks the conclusion of Russell T Davies's sixth and final series as head writer and executive producer during his current tenure. The production was managed by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios. It follows a Christmas special written by Steven Moffat.
The series features Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor in his second and final series. He is joined by new companion Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, and the returning Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. This marks the first TARDIS team composed solely of people of colour, as the show highlights the duo of Gatwa and Sethu. Millie Gibson's character appears in the fourth, seventh, and eighth episodes. Varada Sethu previously appeared in the 2024 episode 'Boom'.
Major production transformations occurred, such as Disney+ securing global broadcasting rights before the last season. While the series was produced in collaboration with Disney Branded Television, it will be the final such collaboration, as a planned succeeding special was cancelled following the announcement that Disney+ would not provide further backing. The series consists of eight episodes, including a two-part finale. Filming for the production concluded in May 2024.
The narrative introduces complex elements, such as the reveal that the recurring character Mrs. Flood is actually the Time Lord villain the Rani. The series also explores the Doctor's ethnicity and features cameos from former stars, including Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor and Billie Piper, whose exact role remains officially undisclosed. The plot involves the god-like Pantheon of Discord. The series also features the return of Susan Foreman.
