The man who first wore the title of the Dragon
In short: Before the vampire myth took hold, there was a prince caught between empires. Vlad II Dracul was not a monster of fiction, but a real voivode of Wallachia who navigated a brutal landscape of shifting loyalties between the Ottoman Turks and the Kingdom of Hungary.
Vlad II Dracul, born around 1395, was the fourth son of Mircea I of Wallachia. His life was defined by the precarious balance of power in Eastern Europe during the decline of the Byzantine Empire and the rapid expansion of the Ottoman Turks. While he is famously the father of Vlad the Impaler, Vlad II was a complex political actor in his own right, often struggling to maintain Wallachian independence from both Hungarian and Turkish neighbors. His title, 'Dracul' (the Dragon), originated from his membership in the Order of the Dragon in 1431. This prestigious knightly order was established by Sigismund of Luxembourg, who also recognized Vlad as the lawful voivode of Wallachia. Nevertheless, the Ottoman Sultan Murad II supported Alexander I Aldea, Vlad's half-brother, who blocked his route to the throne. Following Alexander's demise, Vlad gained control in 1436 through assistance from Hungary. Vlad's reign was marked by extreme volatility. The Ottomans took him prisoner in 1442, requiring him to deposit his two small sons as captives within their palace. Though restored to power in 1443 with Ottoman help, his relationship with the Hungarian leader John Hunyadi soured as Vlad sought peace with the Sultan. This diplomatic balancing act ultimately led to his downfall; in late November 1447, he was forced to flee Târgoviște by Hunyadi's forces and was killed in a nearby village.
