In short: The Duchy of Urbino was a tiny Italian state that punched far above its weight. Under the House of Montefeltro and later the della Rovere family, it transformed from a modest county into a cultural beacon, hosting masters like Raphael and Bramante before its final annexation by the Papal States in 1631.

Established as a county in 1213, Urbino evolved into a duchy in 1443 under Pope Eugene IV. Its rise was defined by the leadership of Federico da Montefeltro, who ruled from 1444 until 1482. Federico was a dual-threat prince, balancing a formidable military career with a sophisticated patronage of the arts. He commissioned the iconic Ducal Palace and assembled one of the Renaissance's most significant libraries, attracting luminaries such as Piero della Francesca and Leon Battista Alberti.

The duchy's political landscape was often precarious, marked by shifting alliances and territorial struggles against the Papal States. Following the death of the childless Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, the title passed to Francesco Maria I della Rovere. He expanded the state's reach, notably moving the capital to Pesaro in 1523. This period saw continued prosperity and the patronage of artists like Titian, though the shift in capital caused economic and demographic strain on the city of Urbino itself.

By the early 17th century, the duchy faced a succession crisis. The final duke, Francesco Maria II della Rovere, saw his only son, Federico Ubaldo, die prematurely in 1623. With no male heir, the aging duke facilitated the state's devolution to the Roman Curia. When he died in 1631, Pope Urban VIII formally annexed the territory. While the land was absorbed into the Papal States, the family's vast collection of art and jewels was inherited by the duke's daughter, Vittoria, who carried these treasures to Florence upon marrying into the House of Medici.
