The rare athlete who mastered the power-speed combination
In short: Before the modern era of specialized training, Eric Davis redefined what a baseball player could be. A former basketball prospect with elite foot speed and raw power, he achieved historic milestones that remains rare even today, before a career of brilliance was largely defined by a battle with injury.
Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Davis was a standout multi-sport athlete at John C. Fremont High School. While he possessed the talent to pursue the NBA—averaging 29 points and 10 assists per game during his senior year—he ultimately focused on baseball. This decision led to a career characterized by a rare combination of speed and power that earned him the nickname "Eric the Red."
His peak years with the Cincinnati Reds were nothing short of historic. He was the initial Major League Baseball athlete to smash three grand slams during a single month in 1987. During that year, he was the first to combine 50 stolen bases with 30 or more home runs, a milestone previously reached by only six individuals.
Davis's statistical dominance was matched by his resilience. He was a two-time All-Star and a five-time top-15 finalist for the NL MVP between 1986 and 1990. Even after facing significant setbacks, including a diagnosis of colon cancer in 1997, he managed to hit 28 home runs for the Baltimore Orioles in 1998. Despite his immense talent, a series of injuries eventually forced his retirement in 2001.
His legacy is one of extreme highs and physical tolls. While he achieved a 30/50 season and a World Series title in 1990, the physical demands of his playing style—including a lacerated kidney sustained during that championship run—contributed to a career marked by frequent medical interruptions.
