How a sixth-round underdog rewrote the NFL record books
In short: In 1995, Terrell Davis entered the NFL as a longshot, a 196th overall pick with an injury-prone reputation. In just seven seasons, he transformed from a sixth-stringer into a Hall of Fame legend, shattering postseason records and leading the Denver Broncos to championship glory.
Many doubted Davis after his selection during the 1995 NFL Draft's sixth round. His collegiate career at Georgia had been marred by a hamstring tear, and scouts were wary of his durability. Furthermore, his draft stock was impacted by a lack of available game film, as his coach, Goff, had denied scouts access to his footage. Despite these hurdles, Davis earned a spot on the Broncos roster by impressing the coaching staff with his physicality during pre-season training camp.
His ascent was meteoric. During his rookie season, he became the lowest-drafted player to ever surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single year. By 1998, he achieved what only the fourth player in NFL history had done at that time: rushing for over 2,000 yards in a single season. That same year, he earned league MVP honors and became the first player to surpass the 2,000-yard mark and win a Super Bowl in the same season.
Davis's postseason dominance remains nearly unparalleled. In the 1997 playoffs, he set an NFL record with eight rushing touchdowns, a performance that earned him Super Bowl XXXII MVP honors. He also achieved a streak of seven consecutive postseason games with over 100 rushing yards, breaking the previous record of six held by John Riggins. His legacy endured despite a 2001 career-ending injury; the Pro Football Hall of Fame honoured him in 2017.
Beyond the statistics, Davis left a cultural mark on Denver. He popularized the 'Mile High Salute,' a celebratory gesture toward fans and service members that reflected his view of the running back position as one requiring a soldier's mentality. His career, though brief, stands as a masterclass in efficiency and impact, characterized by 7,607 career rushing yards and a legacy of unprecedented postseason production.
