From NCAA champion to NBA professional and beloved broadcaster
In short: Eric Montross was a force on the court, leading the North Carolina Tar Heels to a national title in 1993. Beyond his athletic prowess, he became a cornerstone of the Chapel Hill community as a broadcaster and a dedicated advocate for cancer research.
Born in Indianapolis, Montross was a standout athlete at Lawrence North High School, where he was a McDonald's All-American in 1990 and a baseball pitcher drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1994. His collegiate career at the University of North Carolina spanned from 1990 to 1994, during which he played under head coach Dean Smith. A pivotal moment in his career arrived in 1993, when he served as the starting center for the Tar Heels' NCAA championship victory against Michigan.
His professional journey began in the 1994 NBA draft, where the Boston Celtics selected him with the ninth overall pick. Spanning nine seasons, Montross's NBA career included stints with the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, and Dallas Mavericks. While his rookie season saw him named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, his production fluctuated as he moved through various teams via several trades during the mid-to-late 1990s.
After retiring from professional play, Montross remained deeply connected to the University of North Carolina. He served as a color analyst for the Tar Heel Sports Network for 18 seasons and worked as the senior major gifts director for the Rams Club. Even while battling cancer, which he was diagnosed with in March 2023, he remained a prominent ambassador for the university. He passed away on December 17, 2023, at the age of 52, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and determination.
