From NBA championships to college royalty: The rise of Michael Malone
In short: How does a coach bridge the gap between elite professional success and one of college sports' most storied legacies? By blending 24 years of NBA experience with a pedigree of high-level mentorship, Michael Malone is stepping into the historic spotlight of North Carolina basketball.
Michael Malone arrives in Chapel Hill as the new head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels, tasked with stewarding one of college basketball's most prestigious legacies. His appointment follows a rigorous search led by Executive Associate Athletic Director Steve Newmark and others, including UNC legend Antawn Jamison. The university sought a leader who could navigate the modern landscape of college athletics while maintaining the program's tradition of excellence.
Malone’s resume is defined by high-level professional success. He spent 24 years in the NBA, most notably leading the Denver Nuggets to their first world championship in 2023. During his 10-season tenure with Denver (2015–2025), he became the franchise's winningest coach with 471 wins and led them to three 50-win seasons. His experience includes coaching icons like Nikola Jokić, LeBron James, and Steph Curry, as well as developing players for professional careers.
His path to the top was built on a foundation of diverse roles. Before his NBA head coaching stints with the Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets, Malone spent 12 years as an assistant coach across the Knicks, Cavaliers, Hornets, and Warriors. He also spent seven seasons in the college ranks at Oakland University, Providence, and Virginia. This unique trajectory—from high school coaching to administrative roles at UVA to NBA championship glory—provides him with a rare perspective on player development.
Basketball heritage defines Malone's history; for almost 30 years, his dad, Brendan Malone, worked as an NBA coach. A graduate of Loyola (Md.) with a history degree, Malone was inducted into the Greyhounds’ Athletics Hall of Fame for his playing days as a point guard. Now, he brings that combination of personal history and professional mastery to one of the most scrutinized seats in sports.
