The first American defenseman to skip the traditional path to the NHL
In short: In 2006, Erik Johnson shattered a 44-year precedent. By choosing to play college hockey instead of turning pro immediately, he became a pioneer for American-born defensemen, navigating a unique path that balanced collegiate development with elite professional expectations.
Erik Johnson's entry into the National Hockey League was marked by a significant historical first. The St. Louis Blues chose him as the 2006 NHL entry draft's first overall pick. As an American-born defender, he was the initial selection who lacked experience in Canadian collegiate or major junior leagues. This distinction highlighted a shift in how scouts viewed the developmental trajectories of American players. Before his draft, he played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program at age 16. He also spent two years at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, Minnesota. During his time in the development program, he scored 49 points in 47 games with the under-18 squad.
Despite the opportunity to turn professional immediately, Johnson chose to attend the University of Minnesota. Following this choice, he was the first individual in 44 years to enter college hockey after being drafted first overall. During his freshman season in 2006–07, he quickly established himself as a top defensive talent, leading all WCHA rookie defensemen and earning a spot on the WCHA All-Rookie Team before signing his entry-level contract in 2007.
Johnson's career was defined by longevity and adaptation. After 13 seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2022, he moved to the Buffalo Sabres and later the Philadelphia Flyers. His journey included overcoming significant physical hurdles, such as a torn ACL and MCL in 2008, and a notable 10-pound weight reduction in 2014 to improve mobility. Johnson achieved a 300-point total on 29 February 2020, becoming the initial 2006 draft defenseman to do so, while also being the 37th American-born blueliner to hit that milestone in the NHL. He also became the first Avalanche defenseman selected for an All-Star Game since 2004. In 2022, he was first in line for the Stanley Cup handoff. He recently joined the Philadelphia Flyers in a trade involving a fourth-round pick.
