How a lack of professional pathways forced a basketball star back to football
In short: In 2017, Erin Phillips returned to a sport she hadn't played competitively in 18 years. After a decorated career as a WNBA champion and Olympic basketballer, the Australian athlete proved that elite athleticism is never truly lost, even when a career pivot is forced by a lack of opportunity.
Born in 1985 to a professional footballer, Phillips was a standout talent in Australian rules football from a young age. However, at age 14, she pivoted to basketball because professional opportunities for female footballers simply did not exist. This transition led to a stellar basketball career, including nine seasons in the WNBA, where she played for five different teams and secured two championships, notably with the Indiana Fever in 2012 and the Phoenix Mercury in 2014.
Her basketball accolades were significant: she was a two-time WNBA champion, a member of the 2006 FIBA World Championship gold medal-winning Australian team, and a 2016 Olympic co-vice captain. In the Australian WNBL, she was a three-time All-WNBL standout and a champion with the Adelaide Lightning in 2008. Her physical style and precision from three-point range made her a formidable presence on the court.
The landscape shifted in 2017 with the launch of the AFLW. At age 31, Phillips returned to her first love, joining the Adelaide Crows. Despite the nearly two-decade hiatus from competitive football, she became a premier star of the new league, winning the league's best and fairest award in both 2017 and 2019. Her impact was so profound that she was recognized with an induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in June 2025.
Phillips's journey represents a unique intersection of sporting eras, moving from a time of limited female professional pathways to becoming a cornerstone of the modern professional era in both basketball and football.
