In short: Before he became the architect of Chanel No. 5, Ernest Beaux was a Russian-trained perfumer navigating the chaos of the Bolshevik Revolution. His mastery of synthetic aldehydes and his unique approach to composing scents like musical scores transformed the industry, forever linking his legacy to the world's most famous fragrance.

Born in Moscow in 1881, Ernest Beaux began his career at A. Rallet & Co., the foremost Russian perfume house. His early success included the 1912 fragrance Bouquet de Napoleon, created to mark the centennial of the Battle of Borodino. However, his subsequent attempt to honor Catherine the Great with a new scent faltered as rising tensions between Russia and Germany preceded World War I. Beaux’s life was upended by the Russian Revolution; he served as an intelligence officer during the Russian Civil War before eventually settling in Paris in 1919.

Beaux’s pivotal moment arrived in 1920 when he met Coco Chanel through the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. He presented her with two series of numbered samples. Chanel selected the fifth bottle, which contained an overdose of aldehydes—a synthetic material Beaux believed was the future of perfumery. Chanel decided to launch the scent on the fifth day of the fifth month, cementing the name Chanel No. 5. The perfume was initially a limited gift for her best clients in 1921 before its official commercial launch in 1922.

Beaux viewed perfumery as a form of musical composition, claiming he could write a formula without needing to sniff the ingredients during the process. His expertise was so highly valued that when Bader and Wertheimer founded Les Parfums Chanel in 1924, they hired him as chief perfumer. He remained in this role until his retirement in 1954, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be preserved at the Osmothèque in Versailles. He passed away in Paris in 1961, aged 79.
