Was the world's most secure prison truly escape proof?
In short: Alcatraz, famously known as "The Rock," was designed to be an inescapable fortress. Yet, between 1934 and 1963, thirty-six men attempted fourteen separate escapes. While most were caught or perished, some daring inmates managed to fool guards with clever decoys, leaving their ultimate fate a mystery.
During its peak as a maximum security federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963, Alcatraz was considered the ultimate fortress. Situated upon a remote island within San Francisco Bay, the penitentiary sat amidst the Pacific's frigid, turbulent waves. To ensure security, the facility featured tougher iron bars, strategically positioned guard towers, and a strict regimen that included a dozen prisoner checks every single day. The facility was re-fortified during the high point of a major war on crime. It was located on a lonely island in the middle of the bay.
Despite these formidable defenses, the prison's reputation for being escape-proof was frequently challenged. Between 1934 and its closure in 1963, a total of 36 men attempted 14 separate escapes. Most of these attempts ended in failure, with the inmates either being recaptured or failing to survive the attempt. However, the most famous incident occurred in June 1962, involving Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin. The inmate population included notorious public enemies like Al Capone. Even George 'Machine Gun' Kelly was held within its walls.
These three men, who were known to each other from previous prison stints, were assigned to adjoining cells. Morris, recognized for his intelligence, led the planning of a daring escape. On the morning of June 12, 1962, guards conducting routine bed checks discovered that the men were missing. Replacements consisted of ingenious decoys crafted from plaster, skin-coloured pigment, and actual human hair. These decoys were so convincing they fooled the night guards, leaving the fate of the three men a mystery to this day. The group was assisted by an inmate named Allen West. The prison eventually closed its doors in 1963.
