How a group of coal miners built a football dynasty
In short: In 1922, twenty activists met in a local restaurant to sign a treaty. They were mostly poor miners from the Kamenec settlement, with little money and no home pitch. Yet, this humble beginning launched a club that would eventually conquer the Czechoslovak First League.
The origins of FC Baník Ostrava are rooted in the industrial grit of the Czech Republic. Founded on 8 September 1922 as SK Slezská Ostrava, the club's early years were defined by scarcity. The founders, including Karel Aniol and Jaroslav Horák, lacked a permanent stadium and often had to borrow fields from wealthier competitors. Even their first dedicated ground, built in 1925 in the Kamenec mining district, was notoriously stony and failed to meet official standards. ,
The club's rise was fueled by community labor. When they secured land at Stará střelnice in 1934 through a rental from Count Wilczek, coal miners and workers volunteered their time to build the new field directly after their shifts. This working-class spirit propelled them from the lowest divisions to the top tier of Czechoslovak football within 15 years. A defining moment of their early success came in 1937, when the newcomer side stunned the legendary Sparta Prague with a 3–2 victory.
,
The club's 'Golden Era' saw them reach the pinnacle of domestic and international competition. They secured three Czechoslovak First League titles, including triumphs in 1975–76 and 1980–81, and even reached the quarter-finals of the 1980–81 UEFA European Cup. While the club has faced modern challenges, including financial distress and relegation in 2015, recent investments of 150 million Kč into youth facilities under owner Václav Brabec signal a renewed commitment to their foundational roots.
