How a railway official's request built a Czech football powerhouse
In short: In 1911, a state railway official filed a simple request that would change Czech sports forever. After decades of amateurism and shifting political identities, Viktoria Plzeň transformed from a local club into a dominant force, securing six national championships and making waves across Europe.
The club's origins trace back to August 1911, following a request by Jaroslav Ausobský, a state railway official. In its early years, Viktoria Plzeň operated as a purely amateur club, but the decision to turn professional in June 1929 marked a turning point. This shift led to immediate success, including a promotion to the First League the following season and a notable 1935 appearance in the Mitropa Cup, where matches against Juventus brought the club to international attention.
The club's history is marked by significant name changes reflecting the political shifts of the 20th century. In 1942, it became Sokol Škoda Plzeň, and by 1961, it was known as Spartak Plzeň. The club reverted to its original title, FC Viktoria Plzeň, in 1992. Throughout these transitions, the club experienced frequent movement between the top two tiers of the league system, though it has spent 27 seasons in the first division.
Viktoria Plzeň's modern era is defined by domestic dominance and European competition. The club secured its first Czech league title in the 2010–11 season, finishing just one point ahead of Sparta Prague. Since then, they have claimed six championships in total, including titles in 2012–13, 2014–15, 2015–16, 2017–18, and 2021–22. Their European journey has seen them reach the Round of 32 in the UEFA Europa League and, most recently, the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League in the 2023–24 season.
Beyond the pitch, the club maintains deep local roots, even installing a dugout shaped like a beer can in 2017 following a deal with a local sponsor. This connection to the region is celebrated through traditions like the club's centennial anniversary, which was marked by festivities in the courtyard of the Pilsner Urquell brewery.
