Were Viking shield maidens real warriors or just figures of Norse mythology?
In short: Explore the distinction between the legendary Valkyries of Norse belief and the historical accounts of shield maidens who fought alongside men in Viking society.
In Norse tradition, shield maidens were women who actively participated in combat, fighting alongside their male counterparts. These figures are primarily known through the sagas, which depict them as tangible warriors on the battlefield.
The Valkyries, by contrast, were supernatural entities whose name translates to 'choosers of the slain.' They served a spiritual role, selecting half of the fallen warriors from battlefields to reside in Odin’s hall, Valhalla. The goddess Freyja presided over the remaining half, bringing them to her own realm, Fólkvangr.
