From defender to goalkeeper: the rapid rise of English professional Filip Marschall
In short: Born in Cambridge to Polish parents, Filip Marschall spent his childhood as a defender before transitioning to goalkeeper at age thirteen. His professional journey has since taken him through the ranks of Aston Villa, multiple loan spells, and eventually to the EFL Championship, where he continues to develop his craft.
Filip Marschall, born on 24 April 2003, represents a modern breed of goalkeeper noted for his comfort with the ball at his feet. His trajectory in professional football began in earnest when he joined the Aston Villa academy in 2018. His early promise was rewarded in 2021 when he helped the club secure the FA Youth Cup and earned the title of Premier League Scholar of the Year.
The path to the first team involved significant seasoning through loan spells. During the 2021–22 season, Marschall played a pivotal role for Gateshead, helping the club win the National League North title. His experience continued to grow through stints at Milton Keynes Dons and Crewe Alexandra. At Crewe, his performance was particularly notable; he equalled the club's league clean sheet record of 16, earning praise from manager Lee Bell as a contender for Player of the Season.
Marschall’s career reached a new milestone in 2025 when he signed for Stevenage, where he demonstrated his consistency by winning the League One Golden Glove with 19 clean sheets. By September 2026, he had moved to the EFL Championship club Millwall. Beyond his club duties, Marschall maintains a unique international profile, holding eligibility for both England and Poland. He has represented England at the U19 level and attended a training camp for the Polish U19 squad in 2021, reflecting his diverse background and linguistic skills in English, Polish, and Spanish.
