From Czech youth prospect to Eredivisie goalkeeper: the career of Matěj Kovář
In short: Born in 2000, Matěj Kovář has navigated a complex path through European football. After moving to Manchester United as a teenager, he gained experience across multiple loan spells before establishing himself as a top-tier goalkeeper. His journey reflects the modern reality of professional development in the global game.
Matěj Kovář began his professional journey in his native Czech Republic with 1. FC Slovácko before moving to England in January 2018 to join the Manchester United youth system at age 17. His early years in England were defined by rapid progression through the club's youth and reserve ranks. By the 2018–19 season, he had established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for the reserve team, playing in 17 of their 22 league matches, while also gaining experience in the UEFA Youth League.
The path to senior football involved several strategic loan moves. Kovář spent time at Swindon Town and Burton Albion, gaining essential match experience. A pivotal moment occurred in September 2022 when he joined Sparta Prague on loan. His performance there was instrumental in helping the club secure its first championship title since 2014, earning him the title of Goalkeeper of the Season for 2022–23 from the League Football Association. This success preceded a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen in August 2023 for a fee of up to £7.7 million.
Kovář’s international career has mirrored his club development. After representing the Czech Republic at various youth levels, he received his first senior call-up in September 2021. He made his senior debut in March 2024 against Armenia and was subsequently included in the squad for UEFA Euro 2024, where he made his competitive debut against Turkey. His continued growth led to a move to PSV in the Eredivisie, where he signed a permanent contract in January 2026, and his selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
