In short: Following the collapse of the Old Kingdom, Egypt entered a century of decentralized power. While often remembered for political instability and famine, this era saw regional governors rise in prominence and cultural shifts that democratized access to funerary traditions. It was a dynamic struggle between competing power bases in Thebes and Heracleopolis.

Spanning roughly from 2118 to 1980 BCE, the First Intermediate Period emerged after the decline of the Old Kingdom. Central authority fractured, shifting power toward regional governors known as nomarchs. This transition created a landscape of political fragmentation, where the throne passed to kings based in Heracleopolis, though Memphis retained its strategic importance. The era was defined by intermittent conflict as rival dynasties, primarily centered in Heracleopolis and Thebes, vied for control over the country.

Beyond the political instability, the period was marked by significant social and cultural evolution. As the rigid structures of the Old Kingdom dissolved, non-royal individuals gained greater prominence. Concepts previously reserved for the elite, such as identification with Osiris, became more accessible to a broader segment of the population. This democratization of belief was reflected in the widespread adoption of funerary texts, known as the Coffin Texts, which allowed more people to participate in traditions that were once the exclusive domain of the monarchy.

The era is often debated by historians. While some accounts describe a time of pillaged temples, vandalized artwork, and broken statues, others suggest the term 'dark age' is reductive. Scholars like Ludwig David Morenz have proposed the alternative label 'Period of Regions' to better capture the dynamic nature of this time. Regardless of the interpretation, the period concluded with a pivotal shift in Egyptian history: the reunification of the country under Mentuhotep II of the 11th dynasty, which successfully ushered in the Middle Kingdom.
