The power hitter who conquered two leagues and five different teams
In short: Fred McGriff, known as the "Crime Dog," was a model of consistent offensive production. He achieved the rare feat of leading both the American and National Leagues in home runs, a distinction that remains a hallmark of his extraordinary career as one of baseball's most reliable sluggers.
Nicknamed "Crime Dog"—a play on McGruff the Crime Dog—McGriff was a dominant force in Major League Baseball from 1986 through 2004. He was a rare talent who led the American League in home runs in 1989 and the National League in 1992, becoming the first player since the dead-ball era to achieve such a dual-league distinction.
His career was defined by remarkable consistency. From 1988 through 2002, McGriff recorded over 80 runs batted in (RBI) every single year. He was also a prolific home run threat, hitting 20 or more homers in fifteen different seasons and reaching the 30-home run mark with five different teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Chicago Cubs.
McGriff's journey included significant milestones, such as winning the 1994 All-Star Game MVP after a crucial ninth-inning home run and helping the Atlanta Braves secure the 1995 World Series title. Despite finishing his career with 493 home runs—just seven shy of the 500-club—his legacy was cemented in 2023 when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Contemporary Era Committee.
Beyond the statistics, McGriff's career was shaped by his early development. After being cut from his high school team as a sophomore, he returned the following year after a growth spurt. He also spent three seasons in the Dominican Republic's Baseball Winter League to refine his skills, facing elite pitchers like José Rijo and Mario Soto.
