The tragic rise and fall of Chicago drill pioneer Fredo Santana
In short: A central figure in the Chicago rap scene, Fredo Santana’s career was marked by high-profile collaborations and intense personal struggle. From cameos in Drake music videos to a battle with chronic illness, his life story reveals the heavy toll of trauma and addiction.
Derrick Antonio Coleman, known professionally as Fredo Santana, emerged as a significant force in hip-hop starting in 2011. Being Chief Keef's elder cousin, Santana held a prominent position within the Glory Boyz Entertainment crew. His discography, including the 2012 mixtape 'It's a Scary Site' and the 2013 album 'Trappin Ain't Dead', featured a massive roster of talent, ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Lil Durk. His visibility even extended to mainstream pop culture, notably appearing as a villain in Drake's 2013 music video for 'Hold On, We're Going Home'.
Behind the music, Santana’s life was defined by a profound struggle with mental health and substance abuse. He openly admitted to using Xanax and Lean as coping mechanisms for post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from childhood trauma. This addiction led to severe medical crises, including being hospitalized in October 2017 with liver and kidney failure. While he expressed interest in seeking rehabilitation during that period, his health continued to decline.
In 2017, Santana was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and prescribed Keppra, yet he continued to suffer from recurring seizures, which he previously attributed to exhaustion and overwork. On the night of January 19, 2018, at age 27, he was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home. An autopsy later revealed that in addition to his existing conditions, he had developed cardiovascular disease. His death, caused by a fatal seizure, marked the end of a turbulent and influential era in drill music.
