The first publicly gay wrestler to sign with WWE
In short: In 2013, Fred Rosser shattered a glass ceiling in professional wrestling. By coming out as gay while signed to the world's largest promotion, he paved the way for LGBTQ+ representation in a historically conservative industry. Today, his legacy continues through training the next generation.
Fred Rosser, known professionally as Darren Young during his tenure with WWE, began his journey in 2002 on the independent circuit. A former high school football player from New Jersey, he honed his skills in backyard federations before enrolling in Camp IWF. His early career was defined by regional success, including winning the IWF Heavyweight Championship in 2003 and competing for promotions like Chaotic Wrestling and the East Coast Wrestling Association.
Rosser signed with WWE in 2009 as part of a developmental program in Florida. He rose to prominence in 2010 during the first season of NXT, where he was mentored by CM Punk. This period saw him transition into a major role as a member of The Nexus, a group that famously disrupted the main roster. During his time with WWE, Rosser also formed 'The Prime Time Players' with Titus O'Neil, eventually becoming a one-time WWE Tag Team Champion.
In 2013, Rosser made history by publicly coming out as gay, marking a significant cultural shift for the organization. After being released in 2017, he continued to perform independently before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 2020. There, he achieved championship success as a Strong Openweight Champion and currently serves as a trainer at the NJPW Academy, passing on his experience to new athletes.
Rosser's career illustrates the evolution of professional wrestling from a regional independent scene to a global mainstream platform. His journey highlights both the physical demands of the sport—spanning football backgrounds and grueling tag team matches—and the personal courage required to advocate for visibility in sports entertainment.
