The training ground that forged the biggest stars in professional wrestling
In short: Before they were global icons, superstars like John Cena and Brock Lesnar honed their craft in a small Kentucky territory. Ohio Valley Wrestling has spent decades serving as the essential bridge between raw talent and the world stage, evolving from a regional NWA member into a global media brand.
Founded in 1993 by Nightmare Danny Davis, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) began as a member of the National Wrestling Alliance. After rebranding in 1997, the promotion entered a transformative era in 1999 when Jim Cornette purchased a stake, turning the company into a primary developmental territory for the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE). The industry's evolution was driven by this era, with the OVW lineup containing upcoming icons like Batista, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, John Cena, and Shelton Benjamin.
The promotion's relationship with WWE lasted until February 7, 2008, when WWE shifted its developmental focus to Florida Championship Wrestling. Following this, OVW navigated various leadership changes and partnerships, including a stint as a developmental territory for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling between 2011 and 2013, and again starting in March 2019. In 2018, professional wrestler Al Snow purchased the promotion from Davis, merging it with Top Notch Boxing to form the Gladiator Sports Network.
Today, OVW has expanded its reach significantly. Its television programming, branded as OVW Rise since January 2024, is available to over 700 million households worldwide. The organization has also achieved a historic milestone in education: in September 2019, the Al Snow Wrestling Academy became the first officially accredited professional wrestling trade school in the state of Kentucky. Most recently, in May 2025, the United Kingdom-based Morley Sports Management acquired a majority stake in the company, with Rob Edwards serving as CEO.
