In short: In 2005, a single decision to allow adult art launched a platform that now sees 20 million monthly visits. But the history of Fur Affinity is a saga of server crashes, high-profile hacks, and a decade-long era of leadership defined by both community devotion and intense controversy.

The origins of Fur Affinity lie in a 2004 policy shift at SheezyArt, where the announcement of a ban on adult content prompted a user known as Alkora to launch a new, more permissive alternative in January 2005. This decision established the platform's core identity as a space for both standard and adult-oriented anthropomorphic art, though viewing the latter requires a registered account.

The site's stability has been historically precarious. Its early years were marked by significant disruptions, including a shutdown in August 2005 following a dispute between the lead coder and the server provider, and a month-long outage in 2008 caused by hardware failure. Security vulnerabilities have also been a recurring theme; a 2016 source code leak compromised user data, and in August 2024, a domain takeover redirected traffic to various external sites, including cryptocurrency scams and Kiwi Farms.

Ownership of the platform has been equally turbulent. For much of its history, it was managed by Sean "Dragoneer" Piché through Ferrox Art and later Frost Dragon Art. After a period of ownership by the 3D platform IMVU starting in 2015, Piché regained control in February 2021. Following Piché's death in August 2024 from complications of a lung infection, ownership passed to his ex-wife, Susan "Sciggles" Hess.

Beyond technical struggles, the site has navigated cultural shifts, such as its 2022 stance against AI-generated artwork and its 2023 ban in Russia. While it remains a primary hub for the fandom, internal conflicts and administrative controversies have driven some users toward alternative sites like InkBunny and Weasyl.
