In short: After years of hosting millions of fan-driven communities, the social platform Amino abruptly vanished in late 2025. Once a mobile-native haven for fandoms to chat and create, the app faced mounting scrutiny over safety concerns before its parent company, MediaLab AI, quietly shuttered all operations without an official explanation.

Founded in 2010 by Yin Wang and Ben Anderson, Amino began as a specialized space for K-pop and photography fans. Its growth was explosive; by July 2016, the platform had reached 13 million downloads. The introduction of a centralized portal and the ACM app—which allowed users to build their own communities—transformed the landscape, pushing the number of active communities to over 2.5 million by June 2018. The platform offered a robust suite of tools, including voice chat, screening rooms, and administrative roles like leaders and curators who enforced community guidelines.

Despite its popularity, the app faced persistent safety challenges. As early as 2017, organizations in Argentina raised alarms regarding inappropriate content targeting minors. Subsequent reports from authorities in Texas and Kentucky highlighted the presence of sexual predators. By July 2025, the situation reached a critical point when British police identified the platform as a tool used by child exploitation networks. Safety groups had long flagged the app for its susceptibility to sexual grooming, noting how easily adults could initiate contact with minors.

The end came swiftly. In early December 2025, the platform ceased all operations, leaving users with connection errors and no official word from MediaLab AI, which had acquired the app in January 2021. By January 2026, support staff confirmed that the company no longer retained user data, and the app was removed from the App Store. The closure marked the final chapter for a platform that had once successfully migrated fandoms from traditional forums like Reddit to a mobile-first experience.
